Life as an E-mail
By: Steve Self
Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around
like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. (1 Peter 5:8) (NIV)
Spam mail. I hate spam e-mail. Every morning as I come in to work
and check my e-mail, I have a few real e-mails and a million spam
e-mails. Software companies continue to make new software and new
revisions and even patches for specific spam, but it still gets
through. My e-mail in-box is constantly under attack. The devil is
the same way. With every small amount of God's word and guidance we
get, Satan throws in a bunch more junk. We are continually under
spiritual attack.
Satan is tricky, he is very smart and he knows the scriptures
better than all of us put together. He knows how to twist them and
pervert them to make them sound legitimate. It's kind of like when we
receive a spam e-mail, but the title says "re: your e-mail" or
something like that that makes it look like a real e-mail. If we end
up opening that e-mail up, we either get hit with some advertisement to
cut the cost on a mortgage, or lose weight quickly with a magic pill,
or even to become our own boss and be rich by Tuesday at 5 p.m.
Sometimes these e-mails just have these advertisements, but many
of these spam e-mails also contain "worms" or "viruses", which are sent
to destroy our computers. As a matter of fact, I have one on my
computer right now that is going to require me to totally re-format my
hard drive.
As you go about your daily life, be on guard for the "spam" ideas
that Satan throws your way. He'll try to talk you in to all kinds of
things. That's why the bible is telling us to be on the look out for
them. Satan's spam thoughts come in many different forms, they come in
the form of friends, the radio, the TV, and the internet. Pretty much,
if you can imagine it then he will try it. The devil is pretty
successful in bombarding us with this kind of stuff. But God has given
us the Holy Spirit. He acts like our spam software, our virus software
and our registry cleaning software all in one. He can help us
recognize when something is spam and when something is real. Today ask
the Holy Spirit to guide you and to show you when the devil delivers
some spam ideas at you. You will be surprised how much He will point
out. Once He points it out though, you have the option of either
listening or not, the call is always yours.
